Welcome
To the Sustainable City Visualisation Tool website
SCityVT is a project to produce a prototype decision support tool which will aid stakeholders involved in urban developments to create sustainable urban environments. "We know that if climate change is not stopped, all parts of the world will suffer. Some will even be destroyed, and we know the solution – sustainable development." (Rt. Hon. Tony Blair MP, Former UK Prime Minister, speech to the World Summit on Sustainable Development).
A sustainable development is a "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." (Our Common Future, by the World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987).
Sustainable cities benefit today’s society and the societies of the future. It is the aim of sustainable cities to provide more effective and efficient services, increased public health and welfare, whilst reducing environmental impacts. The project will create a 3d simulation of the city which will allow all parties involved in the urban planning process, including the general public to understand and influence decisions made regarding the development of urban environments. Initial research will develop a prototype based on the Dundee waterfront regeneration.
The development of the prototype will take the approach of developing a number of mathematical models to simulate the sustainability factors involved (Economic,Social and Environmental). These models will then be combined to create a single integrated model of sustainability. The results of this integrated model will then be displayed to the user (stakeholders) through a 3D Visualisation of the development.
